Jane French

Jane is a qualified Social Worker who has been training and specialising in counselling for thirty years.

Jane has worked in many different settings including palliative care, sexual health clinic, Kings Cross community centre, adoption agency and, for the last 12 years, a general counselling service. She has been enriched by therapeutic relationships with clients from a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences.

Jane worked in various organisations under NSW Health and NGOs, but now works in a private practice focusing solely on providing face to face relationship counselling.

Jane has extensive experience working with couples over the years, and understands that a romantic partnership can, paradoxically, become a bewildering and lonely experience. This can be the case even when both individuals long for it to be otherwise and cannot understand why their efforts at fixing things seem to lead to further distance between them instead.

In her therapeutic work with couples, she uses an integrative approach but chiefly draws on Solution Focused ideas, Imago and Gottman Relationship Therapies, Narrative Therapy and Bowen Family Systems. In her experience, when people are in a counselling space that is safe and confidential, they can be supported to better understand the impact of their family of origin experiences, grow in awareness of their own current patterns of interaction and learn ways of communicating that help them rebuild connection and rediscover what brought them together in the first place.

Whereas Jane has extensive experience working with couples, she is also able to offer counselling for other relationships as long as both (or all) people wanting to work on the relationship are willing and able to come along in person to each session. So, this includes romantic partners, friends, siblings, parents and their adult children to name a few possibilities.
